The story makes... no sense, but he thinks he at least gets the gist of what the point of it is. ]
I'm hoping I can at least be useful here.

that his mind is still insisting is a possibility. Like Grandma Alice or Shelby or one of his sisters is going to punch their way through reality's walls to get him back. As if his grandmother hasn't been trying and failing to do that for Grandpa Thomas for 50 years, and the idea of his fiancée going down that path makes his heart hurt. ]
