He responds to Sam with a firm nod, then looks around the cliff top.]


I wonder how many they lost before they found this plant, and how many they’ve lost getting it.

[But Sam has asked him something, so he adds,]

But aye, it was a god’s strength, a piece of it. That place wasn’t my home. Wasn’t anything like it. It had great walled cities. Everyone had computers in their skulls. You could take a ship to the moon or to Mars.

You spoke of stories a few moments ago. If you’re from one of those Earths that has England, Europe, stories of knights fighting dragons — as near as I can tell, the world I came from first is much as yours was around 1400. But people: they’re not very different anywhere.
