❀ UNEXPECTED VISITORS

At noon on June 10, a dozen visitors arrive. The Thessyx carry themselves quietly, moving through the base as if they were attempting to enter a body of water without disturbing it. Lightweight robes of some native skein cover their green-grey amphibian skin, but do not obscure the fact that each of them possesses four arms. Once inside the base and in the leviathan’s embrace, they will lower their hoods and additionally reveal fins of varying colors along the back of their scalps. These creatures have slit noses; wide-set, irisless eyes; and mouths that stretch the full width of their skull. With them, they bring a great shell about three meters long and as tall as a small adult human.

The security force of the Adamant greets the visitors on their entry to camp. These strange amphibious creatures inform the security force that they are the Thessyx, and that the shell is full of gifts. The security force is ordered by Chief Security Officer Rémi to lock the shell away until Captain Childe has had the opportunity to decide what will be done with the contents. If you intend for your character to interfere with the shell in some way, please reach out in the QUESTIONS thread below BEFORE JUNE 13TH — this includes if your character would try to stop others from interfering with it.

Three of their number with blue fins on their head go to speak in a closed-door meeting with Captain Childe. If your character would like to attempt to get access to this meeting, please reach out in the QUESTIONS thread below with an explanation of how they would attempt to do so BEFORE JUNE 16TH.

The next day, more Thessyx arrive, and they will remain on the base for about one week. They move around the camp fairly casually, mingling with the Adamant’s crew. They are particularly interested in the hatchlings. If your character would like to ask specific questions of the Thessyx they encounter, please direct them to the QUESTIONS thread below.

Just before dinner the next evening (June 11), Captain Childe announces that there will be a special celebration in the mess hall, courtesy of their guests — all of their guests. The announcement is as follows, and goes out on the communication devices camp-wide:
I'm sure some of you have noticed the Thessyx walking among us. In light of their arrival and the gifts they've brought with them, we've decided to have a joint celebration in the mess. They have agreed to have guards from their city patrol our perimeter, so everyone has twelve hours off. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's strongly suggested.

They've brought gifts for our new arrivals as well. These gifts are to be distributed later. I know some of you will think it's unfair that the Thessyx are favoring them, and that in three years of being here this is the first time they've initiated contact with us. Tensions are bound to be high — but the first person who picks a fight is getting thrown in the brig, I don't care if you're a civilian or not. We could all use this break.

Don't offend them. No fish jokes.

Childe out.
At dinner, a few crew members get out their instruments, and Captain Childe even looks the other way when Senior Engineer Thorkil Bjørnson opens up a barrel of the moonshine he’s just finished. It means going without later, but they’ll share some of their modest wealth with the Thessyx. The mess hall is cluttered with revelry, and some of the tables have been pushed together to make room for people to dance.

The feast is made up of various mosses and seaweeds, pickled insects, and a few mollusks. Whether this sounds appetizing or not, it’s the freshest food anyone on the base has had for a while, and it seems it’s only intended for the Children of the Leviathan. Some crew members look on jealously or externalize their bitterness. Others may be pushier — after all, they’ve been providing for the hatchlings out of their own supplies for a while now. Still others will be surprised if any of the hatchlings offer trades or pawn the food off on them preemptively — they may be inclined towards favors and good will.

A few notes:
  • The Thessyx refer to the hatchlings as ‘Children of the Leviathan.’ They do not appear to sleep, nor do they step out from under the leviathan’s embrace when the sun is out. The three blue finned Thessyx who meet with Captain Childe are not the Thessyx’s leaders, only representatives. They prefer to ask the PCs questions about them and where they came from rather than answering questions about themselves.

  • To interfere with the shell, attempt to be involved in the closed-door meeting between Childe and the thessyx, or to ask questions of the thessyx, please visit the QUESTIONS sub-thread. These options have staggered deadlines so that we can account for each stage while responding to the next; these actions of some hatchlings will reflect on others.

  • By JUNE 30TH at 21:00 EST, please respond to the mod comment labeled THESSYX GREETING with a brief description of how your character would greet the Thessyx. Feel free to write multiple characters in a single comment. We just want to check the temperature in the room.

  • ❀ A DISTURBANCE UNDERFOOT

On June 12th, the thessyx’s visit is disrupted by the appearance of a sinkhole in the gymnasium. The basketball court, which was already in disrepair, suffers the worst of the damage. In the midst of a scrimmage between PCs and NPCs, which the thessyx observe quite rapturously, a 5-meter hole opens in the middle, with concrete and steel and earth crumbling underfoot. Any injured PCs will have their sprains and scratches treated well by the medical team, and the gymnasium will be closed until further notice. Don’t worry! The Adamant’s engineers are on the case, figuring out how the soil’s stability gave way. This could be bad news for the entirety of the basecamp if it’s an ongoing issue. The engineers could probably use some help addressing the issue — to volunteer, reach out to us in the QUESTIONS thread.

Over the next couple days, two more sinkholes appear — one near the Memorial Wall, and one in the showers (though it thankfully doesn’t seem to have affected the plumbing). Anyone injured by a sinkhole will also have their sprains and scratches treated well by the medical team. Cartagena shares a helpful (“helpful”) PSA about the dangers of sinkholes and how to protect yourself, which is clearly dated and has nothing to do with whatever is going on here on Ethyraia:

Hello, Children of the Leviathan! Isn’t that a silly name? I guess it’s the most accurate, since you did come from eggs. Soon you will be one month old! Hahaha! Biology can be odd sometimes.

It’s not just biology, though! Ecology is certainly strange and confusing, and nothing is stranger and more confusing than the ecology of Ethyraia. I’m sure you have all noticed the sinkholes appearing more and more often these days. Do not be alarmed! Not because there is nothing alarming, but because alarm leads to panic and panic leads to more danger!

For the time being, please follow these helpful tips for sinkholes:
    1. If you see a sinkhole, go the opposite direction.
    2. If you fall into a sinkhole, try not to cry. Instead, yell for help!

I think these are sufficient enough guidelines to follow, yes?

Remember, be careful out there! And protect your squishy selves. You never know when you might be useful later. Then it would be a shame if your squishy self was gone. We’d all be very sad. Or most of us. Or some of us. At least me, to the capacity that an AI can be sad.

    Stay safe! Cartagena out.

On June 14th, the first of the critters emerges from the sinkhole in the gymnasium. These creatures are roughly a meter tall at the shoulder, blind, with enormous clawed forepaws and supernumerary hind-legs that appear shrunken and shrivelled and barely provide function. These creatures have tough, armored hides and truly, truly awful breath. They are capable of tearing through metal with their claws, and small arms fire does nothing to them. Within the day, dozens of them have skittered into the base. They seem as confused and afraid to be in here as the basecamp’s residents are to have them here. However, these are wild animals; they react to their fear with sharp teeth and claws. A few perseverant critters find their way into the cafeteria, sniffing out food, while others can be found gnawing on cables that power the lights for the basecamp.

Chief Security Officer Rémi will be quick to pursue an extermination plan. The problem is big enough that the PCs are encouraged to help out, and those who volunteer will be quickly accepted, as long as they aren't trying to offer their own bright ideas.

    A few notes:
  • To volunteer to help out with engineering, please visit the QUESTIONS sub-thread.

  • If your character would volunteer to help security exterminate the creatures, or if they would disregard the security force and go after the critters on their own, please let us know in the QUESTIONS thread so we can talk about what this would look like. Rémi isn’t well-known for liking people who subvert the chain of command.

  • By JUNE 30TH at 21:00 EST, please respond to the CRITTER WRANGLING comment with how you vote the critters get dealt with — extermination, rehoming, or something else. If someone has already commented with your characters’ IC preference, please add your +1 under other people’s comments, so it’s easier for us to sort.

EXTERMINATION: Bruno would help out Security with getting rid of the critters!! He can either kill them or disable them with his Sticky Fingers, and will defer to Security's judgement on what to do with them. Note that he will not explicitly mention using his Stand unless he's asked directly how he plans on dealing with the creatures.

Also, questions for the Thessyx: Bruno would like to ask why they call them the "Children of the Leviathan" - is that the name of the giant dead creature? Or is it the name of the creature that laid the eggs, perhaps? He'd also ask about their society - the significance of the fin color, how their government is organized, how their families work, etc... basically, getting to know them.
unfastens: (that's caught in the crossfire)

    [personal profile] unfastens 2021-06-14 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Bruno will be cordial towards the thessyx, and, naturally, curious about their lives here - although he will definitely be a bit shocked to see them at first! They could be a useful source of information, and more importantly, they probably know how to survive on this planet much better than any of them. Of course, this is all served with a healthy dose of caution - but until they make it clear they have ulterior motives, or start behaving in a sketchy way, he'll treat them as peers.

    [personal profile] unfastens 2021-06-14 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Bruno will volunteer to assist Security in exterminating the creatures and will generally be pro-extermination since they're potentially damaging the electronics, etc. They don't really have the luxury to treat pests kindly, in his opinion. Also, can you eat these?? Maybe we should try?? He will suggest this once we have a bunch of dead mole worms on hand......

    a. thessyx feast (not feasting on the thessyx)

[ Aliens are new - the sapient kind, anyway - and yet he's almost distressed by how he takes their appearance in stride. At this point, nothing can surprise him anymore. The shock wore off quickly on the first day, and now Bucciarati's more curious than anything. Curious about who they are and how they live, and especially curious about why they seem to know about them - the ones who came from the eggs. His focus from the moment he gained consciousness here has been finding answers, and it seems someone who might have them has finally appeared. Several someones.

He's at the banquet, being very polite towards the thessyx and to the refugees, too. Other hatchlings might see him offering bits of the food to refugees, provided they ask him respectfully (or look sufficiently pathetic.) And they'll also see that it's not because he's grossed out by it, himself. He bites into one of those pickled insects with almost no hesitation. ]

    The flavor is surprisingly complex.

[ local cuisine is good to try!! Don't judge him. It certainly tastes better than the borderline toilet moonshine they've got going around, but he has a glass of that, too, and is taking careful sips of it. Maybe he's gotten too used to the fine wines of Naples.

Later in the evening, if he catches another hatchling's eye, he'll beckon them over. ]

Did you see that shell they brought in when they arrived? [ he keeps his voice low and neutral. ] Do you think it's a Trojan horse?

    b. pest control (network)

    USERNAME: bucciarati
    SUBJECT: Creatures.

I'm in agreement that we should destroy these things before they cause any permanent damage to electrical wiring or pipes we have set up. If you run into one and need someone to deal with it, page me.

    [ yes, page. He's from 2001. Be kind. ]

That said, I've managed to capture one of them and immobilize it for the time being. Has there been word from anyone on whether we're going to research these things? There might be some scientific value in keeping a small number alive.

The Thessyx seem reasonable to approach about these creatures, as they're native to this land, so going to them first through Remi is totally a valid approach!

However, yeah, if Remi is too slow or there's no clear answer from the Thessyx and the creatures are causing havoc, Trish is on Steve's side of nebulously volunteering and dealing with it in a way similar to however her fellow Hatchlings choose (which is looking to be a free for all). She's on the destruction side, personally...they're hideous, so her sympathy level for them is at minimum hahaha.

Trish will be appropriately weirded out seeing the Thessyx at first. They're not ugly or immediately gross, so that's a point in their favor. But she will stare, which isn't polite, but if they can read minds surely they'll understand where she's coming from. Maybe.

She won't ask too much of them, choosing to listen in on the conversations that will inevitably be going on around her, but she will gravitate to the younger Thessyx to talk to, if they come off as less stuffy and more curious. Maybe they have more similarities being youngsters like her....

The longer the Thessyx are around and friendly, of course, the more amenable Trish is to having them around, and will entertain questions that aren't more personal than her name.

Questions from me: If the Thessyx are telepathic and whatnot, can they see things like Stands? I'm not sure if that will come up but if they're witness to the Hatchlings during critter wrangling or the sinkholes, they might see one! Not sure if it's important, but with everything going on, the Hatchlings are going to prove their methods of combat and diplomacy are wildly diverse even amongst themselves.

    Food

Oh man haha. Trish will be absolutely disgusted by everything, but the buggy offerings in particular will get a full on shudder out of her. Sorry, Thessyx!

WELL, the mollusk is okay...but if people are staring she will happily relinquish the food to them. She's not one to eat strange things, if they want to develop a rash or pick chitin from their teeth for days, then they may be her guest because she will refuse on principle!!! That being said, the more inoffensive things like seaweed she will offer to the younger Adamant survivors in particular, since, well...they didn't get to choose their lot. They deserve a reprieve more than anyone else. Please don't be poisonous, seaweed....

    Shell

She doesn't trust it, but it's probably not deadly? She'll leave it be.

    Sinkholes and Creatures

Trish will offer to help rescue people from sinkholes! She won't mention her Stand, but people will find that any larger piece of rubble that has trapped them might suddenly be a lot more pliable and capable of being peeled back to free them. This is only with bigger pieces, otherwise Trish herself will be following commands when it comes to relocating people to be treated or to move them (surprising considering her physique, though it's again her Stand doing the heavy lifting but subtly enough to make it look like her user is doing it).

As for creatures, she will err on extermination. She's not an animal person, so any cues they give off of nonaggression are lost on her, and they're causing too much damage to bother.

    Thessyx Questions

Do they appreciate music? Can they sing? Things I wonder about telepathic beings that don't necessarily need to talk...

Trish has very benign things to ask, if only because she's sure the bravado crowd among them will jump in with all the pertinent questions, which is sure to be exhausting to their guests.

Although she will ask if they believe there's something the Hatchlings have in common, from the perspective of natives to the land. Obviously they're not like anyone else on Ethyraia, but they were brought for a reason, right? She may couch is as like, hey, was there a legend or something about a bunch of people appearing one day? Especially if it's posited to a younger Thessyx, since they're surely raised on stories. At least, that's her assumption.

Oh! And she would ask if they have, ah, neighbors. She's glad they seem friendly enough, even if she will remain neutral to friendly to them, but she wonders if there's others on the planet and if they feel the same...she's especially wary since the Thessyx were a surprise to all, including the Adamant's survivors.

hi mods!! Where can the critters be relocated? Would they have to be chased back to the tunnels or out of the base completely, would PCs be able to herd them outside? Matthias is ICly going to be trying for the nonviolent response and doing as much as possible to that end, but practically speaking, what are the options?
    trassel: (Default)

    [personal profile] trassel 2021-06-14 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Matthias' reaction towards the Thessyx will be polite, he will keep his distance at first but curiosity will propel him to ask about their culture and religion, (especially about the creature in the dream and the underwater city) and about the planet's ecosystem as well.

[Bruno will be completely unsurprised to see that Trish has parted with any food gifted to her in particular by the Thessyx. It looked gross, it felt gross, and she gagged when she realized there were insects among it all.

Of course, she should know better than to seek Bucciarati out now of all times, but she is more than a little intimidated with the appearance of aliens even days later...like, it was a natural result to follow, but watching their gills flare and watching them move? Too surreal. And now they're sharing gifts of food and it's just...too weird? The motivations are certainly convenient, at any rate.

When she spots Bruno, she hustles over, her boots a distinctive, rhythmic tapping on the hard floors here, a million things wanting to spill forth from her mouth, all of it shuddering to a halt in time with the crunch of Bruno's teeth on his share of pickled insect.

Trish covers her eyes and swallows hard. God, she's going to be ill.
    ]

    ...I'm sure it is.

[How did they find something worse than the goop...

Anyways, she turns away from him, trying to play it cool this time. She'll just have to accept Bruno will eat weird things.
    ]

But don't you find this really strange?

[The welcoming party in particular, she means. Their little group is the talk of an advanced civilization, which is frankly pretty spooky. Who else was alerted to the planet's new guests...]

well, that was quite the throw. nat raises an eyebrow and shakes her head a little. luckily, it's a warm-up game, so nothing's really on the line (so to speak) here. just a few distant thessyx observing them quizzically. one has picked up another ball and is trying to mimic what they're doing with it. one dribble and then the alien is off chasing it as it bounces away.

it's nice when they aren't trying to kill you, she supposes. aliens have almost unilaterally meant bad news for her — with precious few exceptions.

(and does carol really count? she was human first.)

she retrieves the ball on its rebound, spins it deftly on one finger and then tosses it back to him. clearly, she is Good at Sports.

I'm used to seeing them on TV, but somehow I don't think that really helps the cause. Now, how's your math?

[ he wants to say that when he thinks of aliens he thinks of martians fighting for their independence from Earth's colonial rule, and that's a very classist thing, maybe, but also nobody here would understand the sentiment and so he doesn't voice it out. nobody needs to know the Former Opinions of one Gaelio Bauduin, Seven Stars Heir, Avid Disliker of Impoverished and Strange Folk. vidar, as he is here, is entirely harmless. for the most part.

he looks at the way she spins the ball deftly with interest. Good at Sports, indeed. ]

I will number my follow up questions/comments for the sake of your sanity!

    1. Would their sensitivity extend to their senses, such as being sensitive to sound to track prey via vibrations, light or strong smells?

    2. He will advise the crew not to offer the Thessyx too much alcohol and to possibly let them have access to the showers if they need external moisture.
He probably won't notice he's doing it, but he'll also probably start checking in and offering them extra water to drink and just trying to make sure they don't get dehydrated or overheated.

    3. He'll also chat the Thessyx up about the local ecosystem, asking questions and matching and adding the answers to the notes the captain gave him access to, with most interest going towards where to look for food sources.

how exactly does math pertain to basketball? boy, ya about to find out. nat gives him a bit of a breakdown on the geometry of the whole thing, demonstrating the gentle arc of a throw. there's probably some commentary on percentages, the statistics of defending versus an offensive play, the whole nine yards.

basketball as seen through battle math. it checks out.

[ the same analytical mind, the same thoroughness in method. but it's unfair to ask a stranger too much of what he's nostalgic for, so in the end, he leaves it at that and he does try as asked. the resulting throw is better, with the correction, but a little off with the shot; rome wasn't built in a day. ]

Oh? Were they a fun basketball expert too?

she says it playfully enough, with a coy little smile and a faint wrinkle to her nose. the key to selling a lie is to be unselfconscious about it. admittedly, she's being lax here — almost a decade of having her identity and deeds known to the public has made her a little cavalier about trying to maintain a 'cover'. it's not like she intends to lie if anyone puts her on the spot, she's just — slippery enough not to stand in any one spot too long.

she grabs the ball and bounces it in a pass back to him.

she's been mingling. chatting up the occasional alien, generally having what amounts to a good time. most of it's some species of spycraft — she knows when to smile and when to ask innocent-sounding questions that are absolutely anything but.

she's given away the majority of her food — keeping only a small sample size so as not to offend the thessyx, and she's heading past him to claim a table when he speaks.

she allows herself to be beckoned in, and stands hipshot beside him, popping something that looks like a snail into her mouth without much hesitation or disgust.

(she's russian. she has absolutely eaten worse than this.)

Do you think a race of psychics who can visit us in our dreams would have to resort to that?

she says it with genuine curiosity — it's not meant to be a gotcha. nat's too careful for that by far.
