❀ UNEXPECTED VISITORS

At noon on June 10, a dozen visitors arrive. The Thessyx carry themselves quietly, moving through the base as if they were attempting to enter a body of water without disturbing it. Lightweight robes of some native skein cover their green-grey amphibian skin, but do not obscure the fact that each of them possesses four arms. Once inside the base and in the leviathan’s embrace, they will lower their hoods and additionally reveal fins of varying colors along the back of their scalps. These creatures have slit noses; wide-set, irisless eyes; and mouths that stretch the full width of their skull. With them, they bring a great shell about three meters long and as tall as a small adult human.

The security force of the Adamant greets the visitors on their entry to camp. These strange amphibious creatures inform the security force that they are the Thessyx, and that the shell is full of gifts. The security force is ordered by Chief Security Officer Rémi to lock the shell away until Captain Childe has had the opportunity to decide what will be done with the contents. If you intend for your character to interfere with the shell in some way, please reach out in the QUESTIONS thread below BEFORE JUNE 13TH — this includes if your character would try to stop others from interfering with it.

Three of their number with blue fins on their head go to speak in a closed-door meeting with Captain Childe. If your character would like to attempt to get access to this meeting, please reach out in the QUESTIONS thread below with an explanation of how they would attempt to do so BEFORE JUNE 16TH.

The next day, more Thessyx arrive, and they will remain on the base for about one week. They move around the camp fairly casually, mingling with the Adamant’s crew. They are particularly interested in the hatchlings. If your character would like to ask specific questions of the Thessyx they encounter, please direct them to the QUESTIONS thread below.

Just before dinner the next evening (June 11), Captain Childe announces that there will be a special celebration in the mess hall, courtesy of their guests — all of their guests. The announcement is as follows, and goes out on the communication devices camp-wide:
I'm sure some of you have noticed the Thessyx walking among us. In light of their arrival and the gifts they've brought with them, we've decided to have a joint celebration in the mess. They have agreed to have guards from their city patrol our perimeter, so everyone has twelve hours off. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's strongly suggested.

They've brought gifts for our new arrivals as well. These gifts are to be distributed later. I know some of you will think it's unfair that the Thessyx are favoring them, and that in three years of being here this is the first time they've initiated contact with us. Tensions are bound to be high — but the first person who picks a fight is getting thrown in the brig, I don't care if you're a civilian or not. We could all use this break.

Don't offend them. No fish jokes.

Childe out.
At dinner, a few crew members get out their instruments, and Captain Childe even looks the other way when Senior Engineer Thorkil Bjørnson opens up a barrel of the moonshine he’s just finished. It means going without later, but they’ll share some of their modest wealth with the Thessyx. The mess hall is cluttered with revelry, and some of the tables have been pushed together to make room for people to dance.

The feast is made up of various mosses and seaweeds, pickled insects, and a few mollusks. Whether this sounds appetizing or not, it’s the freshest food anyone on the base has had for a while, and it seems it’s only intended for the Children of the Leviathan. Some crew members look on jealously or externalize their bitterness. Others may be pushier — after all, they’ve been providing for the hatchlings out of their own supplies for a while now. Still others will be surprised if any of the hatchlings offer trades or pawn the food off on them preemptively — they may be inclined towards favors and good will.

A few notes:
  • The Thessyx refer to the hatchlings as ‘Children of the Leviathan.’ They do not appear to sleep, nor do they step out from under the leviathan’s embrace when the sun is out. The three blue finned Thessyx who meet with Captain Childe are not the Thessyx’s leaders, only representatives. They prefer to ask the PCs questions about them and where they came from rather than answering questions about themselves.

  • To interfere with the shell, attempt to be involved in the closed-door meeting between Childe and the thessyx, or to ask questions of the thessyx, please visit the QUESTIONS sub-thread. These options have staggered deadlines so that we can account for each stage while responding to the next; these actions of some hatchlings will reflect on others.

  • By JUNE 30TH at 21:00 EST, please respond to the mod comment labeled THESSYX GREETING with a brief description of how your character would greet the Thessyx. Feel free to write multiple characters in a single comment. We just want to check the temperature in the room.

  • ❀ A DISTURBANCE UNDERFOOT

On June 12th, the thessyx’s visit is disrupted by the appearance of a sinkhole in the gymnasium. The basketball court, which was already in disrepair, suffers the worst of the damage. In the midst of a scrimmage between PCs and NPCs, which the thessyx observe quite rapturously, a 5-meter hole opens in the middle, with concrete and steel and earth crumbling underfoot. Any injured PCs will have their sprains and scratches treated well by the medical team, and the gymnasium will be closed until further notice. Don’t worry! The Adamant’s engineers are on the case, figuring out how the soil’s stability gave way. This could be bad news for the entirety of the basecamp if it’s an ongoing issue. The engineers could probably use some help addressing the issue — to volunteer, reach out to us in the QUESTIONS thread.

Over the next couple days, two more sinkholes appear — one near the Memorial Wall, and one in the showers (though it thankfully doesn’t seem to have affected the plumbing). Anyone injured by a sinkhole will also have their sprains and scratches treated well by the medical team. Cartagena shares a helpful (“helpful”) PSA about the dangers of sinkholes and how to protect yourself, which is clearly dated and has nothing to do with whatever is going on here on Ethyraia:

Hello, Children of the Leviathan! Isn’t that a silly name? I guess it’s the most accurate, since you did come from eggs. Soon you will be one month old! Hahaha! Biology can be odd sometimes.

It’s not just biology, though! Ecology is certainly strange and confusing, and nothing is stranger and more confusing than the ecology of Ethyraia. I’m sure you have all noticed the sinkholes appearing more and more often these days. Do not be alarmed! Not because there is nothing alarming, but because alarm leads to panic and panic leads to more danger!

For the time being, please follow these helpful tips for sinkholes:
    1. If you see a sinkhole, go the opposite direction.
    2. If you fall into a sinkhole, try not to cry. Instead, yell for help!

I think these are sufficient enough guidelines to follow, yes?

Remember, be careful out there! And protect your squishy selves. You never know when you might be useful later. Then it would be a shame if your squishy self was gone. We’d all be very sad. Or most of us. Or some of us. At least me, to the capacity that an AI can be sad.

    Stay safe! Cartagena out.

On June 14th, the first of the critters emerges from the sinkhole in the gymnasium. These creatures are roughly a meter tall at the shoulder, blind, with enormous clawed forepaws and supernumerary hind-legs that appear shrunken and shrivelled and barely provide function. These creatures have tough, armored hides and truly, truly awful breath. They are capable of tearing through metal with their claws, and small arms fire does nothing to them. Within the day, dozens of them have skittered into the base. They seem as confused and afraid to be in here as the basecamp’s residents are to have them here. However, these are wild animals; they react to their fear with sharp teeth and claws. A few perseverant critters find their way into the cafeteria, sniffing out food, while others can be found gnawing on cables that power the lights for the basecamp.

Chief Security Officer Rémi will be quick to pursue an extermination plan. The problem is big enough that the PCs are encouraged to help out, and those who volunteer will be quickly accepted, as long as they aren't trying to offer their own bright ideas.

    A few notes:
  • To volunteer to help out with engineering, please visit the QUESTIONS sub-thread.

  • If your character would volunteer to help security exterminate the creatures, or if they would disregard the security force and go after the critters on their own, please let us know in the QUESTIONS thread so we can talk about what this would look like. Rémi isn’t well-known for liking people who subvert the chain of command.

  • By JUNE 30TH at 21:00 EST, please respond to the CRITTER WRANGLING comment with how you vote the critters get dealt with — extermination, rehoming, or something else. If someone has already commented with your characters’ IC preference, please add your +1 under other people’s comments, so it’s easier for us to sort.

    dinner:
the food really isn't to adora's tastes, but even if it was, she'd still share almost all of it with the crew. she used to live off ration bars, and even if she's a few years separated from that life, the adamant survivors have had it rough for a long time.

(if asked by the crew, or if any of the thessyx seem to take affront at her lack of interest, she'll either explain her reasoning or sheepishly claim that she isn't hungry... right as her stomach rumbles. oops.)

    thessyx:
mostly, adora will ask the same questions as other people have already, with the only notable addition being whether or not they've had any problems with intergalactic tyrants lately. if the answer is no, she'll play it off as having been a dumb joke, but she's clearly genuinely worried about something.

that aside... how successful would an attempt at organizing a thessyx vs adamant basketball game (or any other team sport) be? also how good are they at arm wrestling? i'm sorry i play a jock lmao

Before the creature can sink its teeth into its target, it's abruptly launched over Varric's head, sailing through the air before smashing into a wall, almost like the ground beneath it were loaded like a spring. It's briefly stunned but otherwise alive, however.

Not an elegant solution by any means, but it saves him, right?

But there's still more of them, and if Varric isn't already up on his feet to keep moving, he'll be offered a hand by a girl who, mysteriously, has not a single weapon on her.

Though, if he has any attunement with the supernatural, he'll see the distinct form of a humanoid, pink spirit draped over the girl standing in front of him. If not, then, well, his new ally looks woefully underprepared to be in the midst of this but to be fair, so is everyone else. No one is prepared for things immune to traditional weaponry!

Trish at least feels confident taking on monsters that don't have a more complex thought process than what these things do, at least. And they're not immortal, which is a huge plus.

"Come on! Dawdle too long and I won't wait for you!"

    That's a lie, she would...but he doesn't know that.

Well, I'm some sort of expert at something, so I'll take it as a compliment.

as the ball's bouncing dwindles to a more sedate level (the gravity's about the same as earth, feels like) she goes to capture it again.

    So what's your name?

    I'm Vidar.

    And you?

    [personal profile] dissemblance 2021-06-15 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
ah. that answers a few questions. she's been largely careful so far with her identity on the network versus in person. dostoevsky she is not.

vidar. old norse. god of vengeance. one of thor's many half-siblings in the poetic edda, but truth is always stranger than myth. as far as she knows, at least on her world, thor only has loki and hela. then again — he hadn't known about the latter until very, very recently, and considering the stories about odin she's not sure she'd put it past him to have hidden more than one child out there among the stars.

but this man certainly doesn't strike her as being asgardian. he probably would have broken the little makeshift hoop if so.

    hm.

she gives him a bit of a crooked smile, half-tilted at one corner of her mouth.

Call me Nat. You a handshake kinda guy or a 'shut up and keep playing basketball' sort?

Oh, I'm very fond of handshakes. I can't even pretend to like basketball enough to be a snob about it.

    Besides, that's rather boring.

[ and he extends his own hand. vidar has a genial smile, like he'd always be charming and gentle, though the scars on his face belie that. ]

Delighted to meet you, Nat. [ he wonders what her actual name was. he's fairly sure neither of them gave the correct ones; more like half-truths, if nothing else. but that's fine, isn't it? nobody in this world would care that he was someone else, unless it was necessary; it was probably the same for her too. ]

[ [I'm gonna assume the theater welcome happened and if we need to adjust that we can]

Balthier is out at the theater returning a few items that were missed in the initial clean up and making an effort to thank the local team again. A thank you right after an event, when it's convenient, is appreciated but easy. Making an effort to appear again, in person, with a handwritten note shows effort. Sticks in people's minds. He's reaching back into his Archades days, all the etiquette and diplomacy details he hated at the time, and for once thankful for them.

It isn't that he never used them as a pirate; it was that he never had to truly consider the impact of burning bridges within a community he effectively could not leave. That had been the whole point of the leaving and the piracy, after all.

While he's waiting to speak with one of the busier director types, he spots Alina touring a Thessyx around. He hasn't seen much of her since the performance, but she seems at their sides every time he does. He makes no effort to interrupt, but pirate is as pirate does, and he manages to overhear the conversation -- and her disappointment.
    ]

Trying to run away with exciting strangers? Still sure you aren't a pirate in training?

And all children are stubborn and difficult, for the record. It is one of the three truths of the universe. [ This is an old wives tale in some town he can no longer recall, but good stories are treasures, too. ]

[ Balthier manages to escape falling into the sinkhole by the sheer luck of quickly ducking right instead of left, missing the lip of the newly formed gaping maw by three feet.

Water spouts out of broken fixtures, live wires crackle with sparks, and he's immediately at the edge looking for anyone he can help.

He sees Nat swinging not too far out of reach, and she's good and anchored.
    ]

I have to get me one of those. [ He says it cheerily, even as he's trying to calculate how he's going to reach her. ]

nat accepts his hand — hers is calloused and worn. batons. the butt of a gun. manicures only go so far, and she hasn't had one in years. she was polished and put-together once, now she has nail polish like the sad, chipped yellow at the edges of a sunset that's weeks old but feels like years. hair still faded out to blonde at the roots. she could cut it off. crop it, curl it. straighten it. any of the thousand things she's done before to stand out less in a crowd.

but maybe she likes the dichotomy in colour theory.

she shakes his hand and lets him go with a wry smile.

You'll be less delighted after I kick your butt.

consider it a gauntlet thrown. she bounces the ball once, twice. behind her back, just to show off. it's not ballet, but her shoes didn't make the trip.

[ how interesting. vidar tilts his head quietly, thoughtful. it can't hurt. it's not like he's busy. ] Why not? I enjoy challenges. They can be useful.

[ even something as simple as basketball. what he lacks in skill and experience, vidar will make it up with height and presence. it's not like being chained to a machine. there's a sense of freedom in it. ]

    Thanks!

She doesn't have any particular chemicals on hand but the Adamant survivors probably have or can make chloramine - chlorine or bleach reacting to ammonia - which, at least the formulation Mops uses, can be shot out to act as tear gas that causes coughing, burning eyes, and shortness of breath in humans. And a strong "public swimming pool" smell.

Oh, also! Mops will ask the Captain if the hatchling representative (not her) can have her monocle on hand, her one-eye visor, to record the meeting. It can replay sound and project video on a flat surface. If the answer is no there's a good chance it'll end up in the rep's pocket, where it can still pick up sound.

illumi will greet the thessyx in his aforementioned horrifying disguise! he is not weirded out by them at all, and treats them the same as he would anyone on the basecamp. he'll introduce himself as "gittarackur," not illumi. he's curious and mildly chatty, his attempted deception aside, asking the thessyx about any previous "children of the leviathan."

once he finds out the thessyx can connect him to his less-horrifying form, he'll remain rather casual with them, even lightly commenting on how fascinating their abilities are... his newfound interest in them will make him answer most questions about the world he came from openly!

[ He hears Bruno beckon him over from behind, having just left the dining hall with the intention of... well, removing the couple dozen pins in his face, which will become ever more apparent to Bruno as he turns around with an audible click-click-click of his bones. He's taller, his skin a different shade, his face structure completely different.... the only thing remaining that even connects him to his past form are those bright yellow needles sticking out of his face everywhere that he has on his person from time to time.

Thinking Bruno clever enough to recognize them, having seen Illumi throw them before, Illumi hums in acknowledgement of the question casually, his voice coming out distinctly more gravelly and nearly robotic sounding, gesturing a long-nailed hand. ]

Could be. But I didn't sense anything alive in it. [ He shrugs. ] Are you suspicious?

[ Perhaps like Illumi is, which is what prompted him to change his appearance so drastically upon their arrival? Great minds do think alike, sometimes. ]

    I. sharing is not caring
[ Delicious bugs, mollusks, and seaweed... it really hits the spot! Illumi here has no trouble at all eating the food offered by the Thessyx, eating it just as diligently as he would any other meal.

More importantly, unlike a few of the other Hatchlings, he doesn't offer up a single thing to the crew members or civilians, even amidst the very obvious bitterness in the air of the cafeteria. There are more than a few under-their-breath jealous remarks that are pointed at this table in particular, maybe because Illumi is eating the food all so easily and not following the trend of Hatchlings offering half or more of what they were given.

Any unfortunate Hatchlings sitting near him have to put up with the bitterness, too. ]

Do we really owe them anything? [ His eyes drift to look behind his shoulder, towards the source of the grousing. ] They sound like they think so.

[ He asks this completely genuinely, and loud enough for anyone at the table to hear, apparently mostly oblivious as to why they're all catching mad heat for the pickled bugs they were gifted. ]
    II. electric engineering
[ With the moles having skittered into deeper parts of camp, there's now the issue of them messing with the electrical wiring... one such case is just the type that you and Illumi have been dispatched to deal with! Normally, he wouldn't risk his own hide for hunting these things, but damage to the electricity? Well, that would just spell trouble for everyone. ]

What do you think? Should we kill it?

[ The two of you are watching from afar, out of earshot, from behind the safety of a slightly ajar door. A few of the other Hatchlings take a more direct approach, but Illumi favors stealth and delicate planning, hence the pause before moving to action. As far as it looks, it doesn't seem as though he's armed, nonchalant about the matter as he seems. ]

It might be easier to just lure it back to that hole... assuming it goes willingly.

[ Though, he of course doesn't know his companion's abilities! And it's apparent he mostly only has regard for what will be easiest for the pair of them in this situation, not what they were told to do by Rémi. From inside the room, there's the snap-crackle-pop of electricity as the creature chews through more wires, so they'll have to make a decision quickly. ]
    III. wildcard
( feel free to wildcard me! illumi will be disguised as this gross thing towards the beginning of the thessyx's arrival, so feel free to have your character spot him in this form and be like what the hell (he'll do normal stuff like eating and walking around the camp while like this, it's fine). otherwise, you can reach out to me at [plurk.com profile] lunarians for plotting or hashing out assumed cr! )

[ He's here to inspect to basketball court with a similar intention, wanting to see the progress on the fortification and preferring to steal a look when there were less people around. Apparently, doing so was a mistake, considering that they're now caught mostly alone with... whatever the hell that is supposed to be.

Is he caught off guard by the sudden shriek, and the giant mole-like thing leaping out of the ground? To be honest, yes. But his expression doesn't change much from neutral outside of a slight narrowing of his eyes, thankful that he's at least on the other side of the hole.

That gives him the perfect opportunity to get up on the metaphorical Hydra's back, making a very quick (and risky) decision to clamber up onto it's armored hide after it swipes at her, with the intention of momentarily distracting it from continuing to try to kill her. ]

Can you get up? [ He asks, rather nonchalantly given the state of things, and the beast shrieks in confusion, thrashing this way and that to try and throw him off. ] Or— are you hurt?

    Handy, right?

usually she's anchored by the cuff around her wrist. this is — an uncomfortable but not intolerable variation on the norm.

she lets the cord wind down a bit more to allow her a few more feet of play, and then she nods to him.

so, she guards him on approach. he's faster and stronger, but all that means is that she'll have to be sneakier about it. the fun thing about barnes is that he knows who she is and what she can do as much as the reverse is true — so she doesn't have to play it coy with him, she can just go for it. but first: she wants to learn how he plays.

which means she's doing that uncanny trick you learn in martial arts where you sort of let your attention unfocus and drift so you're seeing more than just the flick of a hand or the pivot of a foot.

I'd say it's more the fact there's only so many things that can come from Earth that we haven't seen before. Aliens are — you know... logical, from that view.

she catches the ball as it loses its momentum after the shot, and points for him to back off to the other side of the court. no cheating in this house, barnes.

Besides, I'd rather deal with them than magic. I've had enough magic to last me a lifetime.

ha, ha, because she died for a magical macguffin, get it?

[ ah. a beautiful woman, but quite confident in her skills. more than what meets the eye. vidar has something else going for him as well, an unfortunate skill born from misfortune - too obsessive, too relentless for his own good. he dribbles the ball as he runs and gets the idea to protect it and how, but should she steal it away from him, he has no problems getting it back: whether by abusing his reach to take it forcefully or with quick reflexes with a hand to take the ball again.

he certainly doesn't have a problem being up against her as a woman, gallant as he is. just another opponent to deal with. if he gets past, and is held back with a steal, he just takes it back again and will chase her around the court if necessary. he enjoys the chase, trying to figure out what else can she do, more than figuring out how to score a point. ]

    showers sinkhole
[ Some days you're really just minding your own business, for once.

Even with the fans keeping the temperature bearable, it's still easy enough to work up a sweat throughout the day while you're finding ways to be useful wherever you can. End up with the front and back of your shirt attached like a second layer of skin.

Three minutes on the dot. He stands under the showerhead and gets to meticulously scrubbing straight away behind the curtain. Walks out three minutes later with his damp hair half slicked back, half askew, and a towel wrapped around his middle.

Gets a few steps past the center, parting his lips with the intent to greet the familiar face heading in for their own three minute allotment. But the words are stopped with a puzzled look, his gaze cast downward at the floor plating.

Must've been unstable for a while now— happens too quickly for even him to react. The plates split where they meet, the soil beneath flowing rapidly downward and taking everything in the near vicinity with it.

    Him included.

He lands in the dark, half buried in muddy dirt. ]

    kids and critters
[ He's been giving his friends what he'd consider a respectful distance ever since Sam laid the future out as plain and simple as anyone could hope to manage.

He doesn't want Natasha telling the other two to lay off. He doesn't need Sam telling him he doesn't have to apologize. Doesn't want to be reminded that him and Bucky are on shaky ground.

He doesn't want to be seen that way. He doesn't want to keep feeling like he's just passing by.

A reminder of the past. A ghost in their lives.

    Ineffective.

(he doesn't want to, or he's not ready to hear them argue that's not how it is
or to find out he's right)

He doesn't ignore them or outright avoid them. He just keeps busy, and everything going on since the Thessyx arrived helps keep his wheels on some kind of track instead of spinning in the dirt. Keeps him focused. And in that way he doesn't have to pretend nothing's wrong. There isn't.

And now there's word spreading around the camp about another problem heaped on the rest. He'd been heading in the direction of the theatre when he hears someone shout:

Hey! Knock it off, get away from that—

A small group of kids huddles close, staring down at something on the ground between them. One of the shrieks, in laughter or pain, it's hard to tell, and whatever's on the ground hisses. ]
